The DOKIPY node hosted by METNO is set up using existing infrastructure and software developed at METNO. The main engine of the system is a metadatabase and portal solution with online access to datasets.

METAMOD 2.x is a portal solution providing Discovery, Access and Retrieve functionality for scientific datasets along with tools for metadata handling etc. It provides a way of searching datasets that are made available online using THREDDS Data Server offering HTTP and OpeNDAP access to NetCDF/CF formatted datasets.

Functionality of METAMOD2.x

The purpose of the METAMOD 2.x software is threefold:

  • To manage a local data repository with scientific data files.
  • To manage a database with metadata for scientific data sets. Data sets are collections of data files, either in the local repository, or in external repositories.
  • To provide a web portal for searching and browsing the metadata database.

METAMOD 2.x now comprise the following modules:

METAMODBASE
Metadata database and corresponding administrative tools.
METAMODSEARCH
Web based search and browsing facility.
METAMODUPLOAD
Web based upload facility for data files.
METAMODQUEST
Web based questionnaire for registering metadata.
METAMODPMH
PMH server offering selected metadata for harvesting by OAI-PMH clients. If you wish to harvest metadata from the METNO DOKIPY node, please contact us by email to dokipy[the_usual_symbol]met.no.
METAMODHARVEST
OAI-PMH harvester client that exports and imports metadata from external sources.
The upload facility is specifically written for NetCDF files which is easily handled in the system provided they are properly formatted (NetCDF/CF1.0 with some extensions). Other files may be handled at the expense of more manual work by the data provider and less functionality in the data repository.

This system provides the functionality fulfilling the IPY-projects and IPY-scientists committment according to the IPY Data Policy. If the required information is available to the data management system, the system will ensure proper management, access control and backup as well as publishing the metadata within the IPYDIS, the scientific community building the International Polar Year.

The current implementation of DOKIPY at METNO has yet not opened the interactive file upload facility as this is being modified currently.

Projects hosted

Some IPY projects have an agreement to host their data through the DOKIPY service at METNO. These are listed below:
